The shawl collar (also called the “shawl lapel” and “roll collar”) was originally used on bespoke Victorian smoking jackets in styles of varying formality, depending on the situation in which they were to be worn. The style is now most commonly used on dinner jackets, tuxedos, and mess jackets (formal evening jackets worn by military officers). Shawl collars add a casual sophistication to any outfit and look good on just about everyone. We use them on our bestselling cardigans almost every season.
